Many companies are currently facing major challenges. In addition to the Ukraine-Russia conflict, supply bottlenecks, a lack of raw materials and increased energy prices are also on the agenda. To overcome these challenges, the German government has put together a comprehensive package of measures.

Below is an overview of the most important funding programmes:

Cash subsidies for energy-intensive industries: Energy Cost Reduction Programme (EKDP)

The EKDP is a programme with cash grants for energy-intensive and particularly affected companies, which are to be supported in the form of a temporary and narrowly defined cost subsidy.

Companies with a registered office in the EEA and a permanent establishment in Germany are eligible to apply. The companies must also belong to an energy-intensive economic sector. The programme subsidises costs for natural gas and electricity in the period from February to December 2022, provided these have doubled compared to the previous year.

The application period runs until 31 December 2022

Refurbishment of properties: Federal subsidy for efficient buildings (BEG)

With the help of federal funding for efficient buildings, incentives for investments in energy efficiency and renewable energies are to be increased. To this end, KfW and BAFA have launched attractive funding programmes for construction and renovation projects in residential and non-residential buildings.

The amount of the subsidy is based on the efficiency level of the refurbishment and is up to 25%; for new buildings it is a maximum of 5%.

Can be submitted retroactively to 01.01.2020: The research allowance

The great flexibility of the research allowance with regard to the application period, both in the past and in the future, is a great advantage for companies. All companies that invest in research and development are eligible for funding.

The amount of the tax subsidy is 25% of the eligible costs. With an upper limit of €4 million per financial year, the maximum annual subsidy amount is therefore up to €1 million.
